Active, not athletic.

This week while at work, three high school boys came up and were selling cookies to create funds for their cross country track team.  I asked them about their mile times, and they were totally excited to share them.

The night before, I watched Becoming Alex Morgan about the soccer star with my daughter.  Very cool.

I’ve never really had a huge athletic piece in my life.

I’ve always said that I’m active, not athletic.

‘I play real sports, not trying to be the best at exercising.’  Classic Kenny Powers.  Yet, I don’t even try to be the best at exercising.  I’m like, average, and ok at exercising.  I just go through the motions to get it done.

I’ve done a handful of 1/2 marathons, and one full (bucket list, done.)  Each and every race I’ve done, my husband asks if I’m going to ‘smoke’ the people I’m running with in the race.  And I’ve always replied, “I’m staying with my friends!”

Being an athletic and competitive person, he looks at me like I am truly speaking a different language than one he can understand.

A perfect example of me being active, not athletic (which, by the way, I see no problem with, and in no way do I state that about myself negatively), is my husband’s family reunion volleyball game.  I’m a tall person.  Active.  I believe tall and active were misconstrued for athletic.  Half way through the first FAMILY volleyball game that included kids, and adults, I was pulled aside by not just one of my husbands uncles, but two of his uncles to point out where I needed to be moving, and when, and how I needed to improve. Sorry guys. Active, not athletic.

I like walking, biking, mountain biking (without much uphill, I’ll whine loudly if there’s a lot of uphill), at times running, and I can hold my own working out at the gym too.  Those work for me.  Although, I’m not good at classes at the gym.  Some of my friends love their classes.  I’m ok with admitting the main reason I don’t like classes:  I don’t like being told what to do.  “Push it harder.  Go faster.”  No thanks.  I’m good.

Being that I like biking and mountain bike riding, I tried a spin class.  Once.  Hated it.  Why?

  1. Being told what to do and when.  (I know it’s not a good quality, but at least I’m admitting it.  That’s worth something right?)
  2. I couldn’t walk for about 2 days.  I now know why people bring their own seat cushion things.  Horrendous.

It has been 6-1/2 years now that I have kept a twice a week crazy AM commitment to working out.  My good friend Timaree from http://thenutritionprofessor.com (just about to publish her first cookbook http://foodiebars.com, it’s awesome) and I have met each and every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 AM (sometimes even earlier!) since May of 2009.  The only times we have missed a day is if one of us is pretty darn sick, or we are out of town.  I have people ask me all the time ‘Do you still work out with your friend in the mornings?’  Yep.  The other days of the week, we do our own things to stay active and healthy.  The early Tuesdays and Thursdays, it’s basically just auto-pilot.  And it is a pretty great feeling to hit about 2:00 PM and realize that I’ve already worked out for the day (because is seems like it had been yesterday being so early in the morning!)  I’m no hero though, the times that she hasn’t been able to make it, I thankfully reset my alarm for two hours later and roll over!

Being active and working out always has the benefit of being able to fit into the clothes in the closet.  But over the past few years, it’s become much more than that.  When I don’t move, when I’m not active, my emotions and my mental health are affected.  I can physically and emotionally feel when I haven’t been active enough.  For me,it helps with anxiety, and all that comes with that lovely quality of mine.  I wrote how exercise can help change my mental state in a past post, Bad Mood Mama.  The quick fix of endorphins, it usually is the key.

I’m on day 45 of being migraine free, so migraine related anxiety is asleep for now.  Still heading towards that 200+ glory mark though!!!  I’ll take what I can get for now and feel good being ‘ok at exercising!”

My treadmill workouts: from laughter to thought provoking.

I continue to try and kick anxiety’s ass through exercise very regularly.  Exercise also allows me to not have to be so careful while participating in one of my favorites…eating.

My TV hook up while on the treadmill is pretty sweet.  Although we still haven’t hooked up cable out in the office where my treadmill is, but there is the XBox, which thankfully has Netflix.

Up until recently, my treadmill workouts included watching stand up comedy.  It was great!  Then, once I blazed through all the Kevin Hart and other comedians of interest, I moved on to The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt:

Hilarious, it filled a big void left by 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation ending.

Once I finished Kimmy Schmidt, I was stuck.  No more comedy found of interest.

So, then I went on to other ‘stuff’.

First up was ‘Fed Up’, a documentary/movie about sugar being the culprit in our war with obesity:

Very interesting, and it made me go a little crazy looking at the amount of sugar in all the labels of the food we eat.  It’s a bit overwhelming.

Next up, I watched ‘GMO OMG’.  All about GMOs in our foods.

Again, very interesting.  Made me think about it far after the movie had been done.

I just finished ‘Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead’:

I really liked this one, very entertaining, and funny at times.  And towards the end, during a scene with a certain t-shirt, I had the ugly cry face as tears streamed down my face while I ran on the treadmill hoping that no one would walk into the office as I was in that state!

I find that having something to look forward to watching while on the treadmill allows me to almost (I said almost) want to get on that thing so I can continue the movie!

Looking forward to more comedy as it comes up, but for now, I’m diggin’ on some knowledge!

Laughter and Sweat

My anxiety gets its ass kicked quite substantially by exercise and laughter.  More on my anxiety, what works for me, and my likeness to Bob Wiley here.

We recently moved a TV out to the office and now my treadmill is facing it.  This is an improvement over bringing my iPad with me to the treadmill and placing it on the console.

We don’t have cable hooked up yet, but we do have the xBox, which has Netflix!  I am now addicted to watching comedy while working out.  I’ve gone through Chris Porter, Ralphie May, and now I’m totally burning through Kevin Hart stand up.

Thankfully no one comes out to the office while I’m working out, because it’s not always pretty.  There are times I start laughing while running, and then it’s awkward because I’m out of breath, but need to laugh, and sometimes it results in that ‘ugly cry’ type of thing?  Ya, I’d better lock the door from now on.

Double whammy to anxiety, sweating while laughing!

 

Happy Thanksgiving!

Years, (YEARS) ago, I worked as a counselor for a nutrition program designed for gyms.  Gym members had the opportunity of joining the nutrition program, which of course would benefit their overall goals.  One thing that has always stuck out from that period of my life is that during Thanksgiving, many of the members were of course nervous to ‘fall off the wagon’ on Thanksgiving.  This program was based on real food, percentages of protein/carbs/fats so that you could eat pretty much any food, it was not restrictive.  Many people talked about fasting until they sat down at the table for the big dinner.  My focus that I remember telling people was that they still needed to eat their meals during Thanksgiving day, maybe smaller than usual, then you aren’t like a shark once you sit down at the table, and just get back on the horse the next day.

I learned a lot about fitness and health through that program, but even more importantly, I met a life long friend.  Needless to say, we were in our early 20’s, and although worked out A LOT, and ate according to the program most of the time, we were caught by gym members across the street at the Mexican Food restaurant putting away super burritos and chips and salsa a few times.  And we were recognized a few times out and about on a Friday or Saturday night, after a beer or two.  But hey, we were in our 20’s, we made good choices most of the time.  🙂

Fast forward to now.  I can’t put away multiple super burritos a week, nor go out drinking without it catching up to me real quick.  Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday, that’s one of my two early morning workout days at the gym with a dear friend.  So, I’ll be there.  Half asleep as I arrive, then feeling good as I leave.

Now, I don’t want to give anyone the impression that I’m some crazy fitness person.  My personal motto is ‘Run to Eat’, exercising it forward so I can enjoy eating.  The only person that thinks I’m bad ass is me when a good song comes on and I may kick the treadmill up a couple of notches.

My son did a bunch of push ups the other night and then said ‘How many do you think you can do mom?’ I said 15.  And then of course had to do them.  I did them, and he then imitated my push ups showing I lowered my body by about 1 inch each push up I did.  Whatever, they count.

Just the other day, we picked up a chocolate turkey while in Napa.  We didn’t go for the $250 super large life sized chocolate turkey, just a small cute one.  Still, this small, expensive chocolate turkey to bring to my parents house on Thanksgiving seemed fun.  And I have to say I may eat it all.  I may resort to yelling ‘Mine’ and running away with it, because an article was shared with me last week that said chocolate is not a migraine trigger.  It’s an article written by a professional, and I’m going with it!!!  See the article here:  http://migrainebrainstorm.com/2014/04/22/why-chocolate-is-just-fine-and-other-incredibly-useful-things-i-learned-from-dr-christine-lay/.
